What is velvet?
The term "velvet" actually refers to the weave, not the material. In fact, velvet fabric can be made from almost any fiber! Traditionally made from silk, velvet is now more commonly made from synthetic fibers such as polyester for added durability. The velvet is woven into a double layer on special looms, and the pile yarn is made from an extra set of warp yarns. The cut ends of the pile form tufts on the surface, giving it a plush texture when cut evenly.
History of velvet
Velvet has a long and illustrious history, with the earliest velvet-like pile weaves dating back to 2000 BC in Egypt. Between 400 BC and 23 AD, China developed uncut velvet fabrics, which are more similar to velvet as we know it today. Eventually, velvet began to be developed more regularly in the Middle East and Eastern Europe, with skilled weavers working in Turkey, Greece, and Cyprus. Finally, velvet production was improved and expanded during the late Middle Ages and Renaissance in Europe. Elaborate velvet was most often worn by nobles and religious figures. Innovations in velvet production and materials have now made velvet more widely available and more affordable than in the past.
